Minoxidil 5% side effects: warnings and when to stop using it

Minoxidil 5% is an over-the-counter drug, but it is still a drug. These are the warnings on its label, explained simply. This page is informational and does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Who should not use it

• Women: the 5% solution is for men only.
• Anyone under 18. Do not use on babies or children.
• If your hair loss is on the front of the scalp or you have a receding hairline.
• If you have no family history of hair loss.
• If your hair loss is sudden or patchy, or you do not know the reason.
• If your scalp is red, inflamed, irritated or painful.
• If you use other medicines on the scalp.

Ask a doctor before use if…

You have heart disease.

What may happen while using it

• Some people notice changes in hair color and/or texture.
• It can irritate the eyes on contact: rinse with large amounts of cool water.

Stop use and ask a doctor if…

• Chest pain, rapid heartbeat, faintness or dizziness occurs.
• Sudden, unexplained weight gain occurs.
• Your hands or feet swell.
• Scalp irritation or redness occurs.
• Unwanted facial hair growth occurs.
• You do not see hair regrowth in 4 months.

Other warnings

• For external use only. Flammable.
• May be harmful if used when pregnant or breast-feeding.
• Keep out of reach of children. If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.
